We chase one mirage after another. The dream of rising
to the top of your organization, of being rich and famous, of getting married to the girl you are madly in love with.... the
list is a never ending one. When we achieve the desire, the novelty of sheer possession wears off and we are consumed by yet
another desire. Worse still we go from one day to another, going from duty to repose to entertainment and then back to duty.
The less fortunate human beings spend their lives completely engrossed in a fight for survival, not reaching the stage of
love and ambition.
A few souls are jolted out of this existence
by some existential dilemmas –Is this the purpose of my life or is there a deeper meaning? Am I helpless in the face
of fate and circumstances? Do I have a say in my life? Who am I? These universal questions are a starting point of a tentative
probing, a curiosity about oneself. This vague interest brings in its wake, a search for THAT which will last forever.
A mystic is one who looks through superficial appearances and attempts to penetrate, understand and
realize the essence of life. Glimpses of the vastness of the space within, and the feelings of bliss and peace, which engulf
him whenever he can abide in this space - introduce him to honey sweet purnata within. Something like reaching home after
a weary day and not wanting anything more than to soak in the feeling. There is a shift in his center of existence from profane
to sacred. And, the soul within compulsively, yet trustingly begins to follow the evolutionary urge. Traumatic losses, crushing
defeats, doubts, confusion, painful turmoil and not to forget loneliness, which is an inescapable parcel of human life, are
the catalysts in the sadhak’s journey.
A fleeting sense of the higher frequencies
that he can vibrate at, transforms the animal man into a truly civilized person. He clearly perceives the silver threads connecting
him to all other things and beings. This is the stage before he attains ‘samadhi’. As he approaches this stage
many changes manifest themselves. There are about ten signs to look out for this awakening of one’s consciousness, which
we will discuss next week.
Ten signs that indicate the awakening
of your consciousness:
1. A change of food habits - some may give up non vegetarian food, spicy food, milk; while natural stuff like fruits and vegetables
may appeal more than ever before. Wheat may be your staple diet; yet, your taste
buds may discover an inexplicably new sweet taste to it. A sweet metallic taste in the mouth may be felt without an external
stimulus - much like the taste of an iontophoretic current. Allergies to particular
food, fabric, pollutants may occur. Change in other likes and dislikes – eg the kind of fabric preferred so far may
be replaced by something very different.
2. Heightening of
the experiences of the five sense organs. Sounds otherwise relegated to the background
like rustling of the wind, the chirping of birds may become the sphere of attention. An
intense surge of happiness and blissful energy may occur at the sight of beauty. This could be a disturbing or an aesthetically
appealing phase by turns.
3. A silent and loving communion
with the elements of nature may be indulged in. You may feel like talking to a tree.
4. Sexual urges may be heightened as also the pleasure of the act. This could be channelized by an aspirant ready for the next stage of soul growth.
5. Relationships may be seen in a completely new light . Maya (the universal cosmic delusion which causes one to perceive what is not as what it is and vice versa) and its
role becomes clearer. This could be a harrowing period if one has not cultivated ‘sammatta’ or equanimity to face
and penetrate the futility of emotional upheavals
6. A deeper
and more penetrating insight into other human beings . An understanding of not just what
the problem is with another, but also, what is the root cause and what the solution is; and further to that, how to gently
steer the person towards his own awakening.
7. An emergence
of skills, interests and parallel vocations so far unexplored. All relationship, career
and attitudinal shifts take place at this stage
8. A sense
of isolation.
9. A distaste for senseless gossip, criticism
and inane talk.
10. A deep compassion with the bitter sweet realization of the common destiny of all beings. More on........... kaalchakra
