In the twinkle of a moment He is here and then it seems He is gone. High 'n low, far
'n out, you cast the beams of your mind, searching for the sly Eluder. But He was never here, never there... deep within the
portals of your heart and in the chasms in your mind, He has always only been Everywhere.
Is your mind a mind of higher
energies or lower desires? Is it the mind of the flower, or that of the wind? Is it silent, introspective, child-like? Above
all, is it a mind of love? Is it aware and one with the Buddha?
Is your mind here,
in the present moment? Are you witnessing deeply, everything that is happening in the now? If you would just care to
live in the moment of each moment for some moments each day, you would soon consciously begin to experience the joyous whispers
of eternal living. The mind, it seems, is the central core of our daily living.
We
have been advised to see no evil, think no evil and do no evil, but using will and reason, through the instrument of
the mind, we must remove the thought of 'evil' and rephrase this to: think only good, see only good, and do only good. Everything
depends on the mind. Nothing can be achieved without purity of mind. He who has a pure mind sees everything as pure. Sin and
impurity are creations of one's mind. It is in the mind alone that one experiences the vast ocean of sorrow and happiness.
The mind is restless, like a wild elephant. Just as the wind makes the flame
flicker, our fanciful cravings make our minds waver. The mind can be a mischievous devil or a divine angel, depending on how
you discipline it. He whose senses are under control and who practices self-discipline through regulated breathing and application
of focused techniques in concentration and meditation will make headway. But control of the mind must also be accompanied
by conscious control of the life force and of the vital fluid. A special eye on the diet too is of extreme importance. Just
as water makes prana (life energy), food makes mind. The body and the mind are interwoven and any change in one is followed
by a corresponding change in the other.
There are no theoretical lessons in the control
of the mind; the lessons are in the ardent, continuous and conscious practice itself. It is a science that requires
more application than any business does. Many may succeed in business, but few in this. And yet it is not impossible. Done
regularly, in three to five years of sincere consistency one can begin to experience a joy unspeakable. The mind is but a
gift of God. Call upon Him regularly in the inner cave of meditation, and for every wave of effort you make, He shall bring
the ocean closer to you.
Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa used to say that the mother bird knows well enough when to
open the egg. Similarly, the Divine Mother bequeaths Her gifts to the devotee when the time is ripe. Work and wait. Be alert
and have faith.
Most of us are struggling to steer the canoes of our lives through
the rapids of endless decadence. And this struggle is a consequence of endless desires. The truth is that there is no object
in this world, which once possessed, can give us everlasting peace and contentment. As the ancients tell us - every human
has six obstinate enemies. These are not without, but within the being - lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and violence.
