When we have vainly banged our heads hard and long enough at the walls of worldly palaces,
we ripen and are ready to knock at the door of our Spirit; at least those of us who survive the ignominy of the hard fall
from the peak of desires and disillusion! What is the password that will make the door to our Inner Being open? Is it 'open
sim-sim'? Not quite so. The search that would end all searches is often challenging, trying, and arduous. Even the most sincere
and eager seeker has to pass through ordeals, though very oft this may not be prominently evident. Buddha arduously sought
a path through about six years of intense search before he reached his own conclusion and propounded the middle path.
Vivekananda searched high and low, knocked many
doors, met many so-called men of God, but nobody quenched his soul thirst that sought a master who had truly experienced God;
no one except for Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. In the very first meeting he touched Vivekananda on the forehead to give him
a glimpse of the Divine, but it was too much for him to bear. Vivekananda found a God-realized Guru because he refused to
be satisfied with anything short of that. The Autobiography of a Yogi
by Paramahansa Yogananda is full of interesting anecdotes about the author's search for a spiritual guide. From his
early childhood he had a burning zeal to find God. Never would he miss a chance to meet a saint or a master. He lived, breathed,
and sought to fulfill only one desire-to know the Divine. He would fervently pray to be guided to a realized master who would
lead him to God. Once he resolved in an almost do-or-die attempt while he was living in an ashram that he would not budge
until the Divine manifested before him. Suddenly then, surely by Divine intervention, he was asked to come to the market by
a friend. There he found his feet almost magnetically being drawn to a particular street; he could not move in any other direction
but that! When he did proceed, he met his master - Sri Yukteshwar Giri who finally led him to the Divine Goal.
To engender manifestation of any desire, you have to focus all your
energies on it. The rays of the shining sun when focused through the magnifying glass can cause the paper to burn up, not
otherwise. This focus is crucial especially if the goal is the Divine One. While other desires may get fulfilled, the Divine
One still tends to stay elusive. Ever silent and ever-present, the Lord seeks to see if we are willing to be pleased and satisfied
with His little gifts or if we are willing to find our true happiness only in the realisation of His Cosmic consciousness.
Spiritualising one's life is not as difficult
as it may seem to many. By practically searching through available paths, one starts crawling to a Divine destination.
When all other desires fail, realisation is the most natural phenomenon experienced. The secret of success is in wanting spiritualism
the way a drowning man wants water.
